Apple Music Hits 40 Million Installs on Android, On Track for Best Quarter Yet

Apple Music has grown new users sequentially quarter-over-quarter on Android since 2Q18, and will hit 3.8 million in 1Q19, Sensor Tower data projects.

While Apple's "It's Show Time" event focused squarely on the company's new subscription video, game, and news offerings, its flagship music streaming service, Apple Music, quietly passed another milestone. Sensor Tower Store Intelligence estimates show that 40 million Android users globally have now installed the Apple Music app from Google Play, and we anticipate that the current quarter will be the service's best yet for new users on the platform.

Apple Music Quarterly Installs on Android

Our estimates show that, following a steady quarter-over-quarter decline in new users for Apple Music on Android beginning in 4Q17 and continuing through 2Q18, the app has grown new users sequentially between 2Q18 and 4Q18, with 1Q19 on track to top all previous quarters. New users of the app in 4Q18 were up 43 percent over 1Q18, and we project that 1Q19 installs will total 3.8 million for a year-over-year increase of 65 percent.

Google Play users in the United States account for approximately 28 percent of all Apple Music for Android installs to date, with India a distant second at about 7 percent to the total. Great Britain, Brazil, and Russia round out the app's five largest markets at 6 percent, 5 percent, and 4 percent of installs, respectively.

Apple Music was the No. 25 ranked app for Google Play Music & Audio category downloads worldwide last month, up from No. 32 in February 2018.
